Packing Tips For Fragile Items
If you decide you want to do your own packing, check out these helpful tips to make the job go more smoothly, especially when fragile items are involved.
Prepare Beforehand
It will take you some time to pack your valuable porcelain, crystal, and other breakables, so start preparing well in advance.
Gather Supplies
For this task, you will need sturdy cardboard boxes in a variety of sizes, bubble wrap, packing paper, scissors, packing tape, and markers or labels.
Label Each Box
Label these boxes as “fragile” so your movers will know to take more care with them.
Research Proper Packing Techniques
Your lamp collection or flat-screen TVs will require different packing techniques than clothing. Research how to pack each item so you can approach each thing with the appropriate process.
Prevent Movement
Correct placement and cushioning are both important when packing fragile items. Place the item in the middle of the box and place crumpled newspaper or peanuts on the sides to prevent movement during transit.
Plates
These should be packed vertically in small-to-medium boxes. Wrap each one individually in bubble wrap, taping it closed. Don’t overpack the boxes.
Glasses
These should also be wrapped individually. First, line each box with packing paper, layering the gaps to prevent shifting. Place the heaviest glasses at the bottom.
Lamps
Pack lamps and their shades separately.
Picture Frames
Wrap photo frames in paper, standing them up side by side in the box. Fill gaps with paper. For large paintings, pack them in moving blankets.
TVs
Remove accessories and cables, packing them in separate boxes or baggies. Wrap the screen with a moving blanket and secure with packing tape. Place the TV in a large box made specifically to house TVs.
Specialty Items
Wrap with bubble wrap, secure with tape, and place it on some cardboard. Place another one on top, sandwich style. Don’t use newspaper on precious items because the ink can transfer.
Pictures and Mirrors
Using tape, make an “X” across the glass. Place a piece of foam board over the glass and secure with packing tape. For additional padding, add bubble wrap. Carefully slide the frame into a picture or mirror box. Each item should have its own box. Stack vertically, not flat. After filling the extra space with paper, tape it up and label it “fragile.”
